Understanding Vitiligo
Vitiligo is an autoimmune condition where the body's immune system attacks melanocytes (cells that produce
skin colour), creating white patches. It affects 1–2% of the population and is particularly visible in
Indian skin tones.
In Lucknow, we see patients dealing with both the medical and social aspects — the condition carries
unwarranted stigma that causes significant emotional distress. At Gomti Clinic, we address both.
Types of Vitiligo
- Non-segmental (generalized): Symmetrical white patches on both sides of the body — the
most common type
- Segmental: Patches limited to one segment or side of the body — usually stabilizes
after spreading for a period
- Focal: Isolated patches in a few areas
Treatment Options
Topical Medications
- Tacrolimus / Pimecrolimus: Immune-modulating creams that encourage repigmentation,
especially on face and neck
- Topical corticosteroids: Short courses to stop active spreading
- Vitamin D analogues: Used in combination with other treatments
Phototherapy
- Narrowband UVB: The most effective non-surgical treatment for generalized vitiligo —
2–3 sessions per week for 6–12 months
- Targeted phototherapy: Excimer lamp for small, localized patches
Surgical Options (for stable vitiligo)
- Melanocyte transfer: Harvesting melanocytes from normal skin and transferring to white
patches
- Suction blister grafting: Creating blisters on pigmented skin and grafting the roof
onto depigmented areas
- Surgery is only considered when vitiligo has been stable (no new patches or spreading) for at least 6–12
months
Realistic Expectations
- Vitiligo treatment requires months of consistent effort — there are no quick fixes
- Face and neck patches respond best; hands and feet are the hardest to treat
- Repigmentation typically appears as brown dots within white patches, gradually expanding
- Some patches may be resistant to treatment despite our best efforts
- We are transparent about expected outcomes based on the location, extent, and type of your vitiligo
Addressing Stigma
Vitiligo is not contagious, not caused by diet, and not a result of any personal failing. Patients from
across Lucknow — Aliganj, Indira Nagar, Gomti Nagar — come to us after being given misinformation. We
provide evidence-based treatment and emotional support throughout the journey.
