Lip Filler Aftercare — The Complete Post-Treatment Guide
Your lips are swollen, slightly tender, and you're resisting the urge to look in the mirror every 5 minutes. Here's what to do (and not do) for the next 2 weeks.
Consult Dr. AnkitaThe First 24 Hours — Critical Period
The first day after lip filler is the most important for your final result. The filler is still settling, swelling is at its peak, and your behavior directly influences the outcome.
Do:
- Apply ice packs (wrapped in cloth, not directly on skin) for 10 minutes on, 10 minutes off. This reduces swelling and discomfort dramatically.
- Sleep with your head elevated — an extra pillow prevents fluid pooling in your lips overnight. Less morning swelling.
- Take arnica supplements (if recommended by Dr. Ankita) — helps reduce bruising speed.
- Stay hydrated — hyaluronic acid filler absorbs water. Drinking extra hydration supports the filler settling properly.
Do NOT:
- Kiss, suck through a straw, or purse your lips aggressively — pressure can displace filler before it integrates with tissue. 24-hour restriction.
- Exercise or do anything that raises heart rate/blood pressure — increased blood flow worsens swelling and bruising risk. 24-48 hour restriction.
- Drink alcohol — thins blood, increases bruising. Avoid for 24 hours.
- Touch, massage, or manipulate your lips — unless Dr. Ankita specifically instructed you to. Squishing filler around can create asymmetry.
- Apply lipstick or lip products — the injection sites need 6-12 hours to close. Cosmetics can introduce bacteria.
Days 2-7 — Recovery Phase
Swelling decreases gradually. Day 2 is still noticeably swollen (30-40% over final result). By day 5, you're close to the real result. By day 7, most swelling has resolved. Mild tenderness when pressing the lips is normal through day 5-7.
You can resume: gentle exercise (day 3), lipstick/gloss (day 2), kissing (day 3), normal eating (immediately, but chew carefully day 1).
Days 7-14 — Final Settling
Fine-tuning happens naturally during this window. The filler softens as it integrates with your tissue. Any initial firmness or "foreign body" feeling resolves. By day 14, the filler feels like your natural lip tissue — soft, mobile, natural.
Dr. Ankita schedules your follow-up at the 2-week mark. This is when: symmetry is assessed, any minor adjustments (touch-up) are performed if needed, and before/after photos are compared.
What's Normal vs What's a Concern
| Normal | Call the Clinic |
|---|---|
| Swelling for 3-5 days | Swelling increasing after day 3 |
| Mild bruising (yellow/purple) | Significant pain, whitening of lip tissue, or blue discoloration |
| Mild asymmetry during swelling | Persistent hard lump that doesn't soften |
| Tiny injection marks (1-2 days) | Fever, spreading redness, or pus |
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I fly after lip filler?
Wait 48 hours. Cabin pressure changes at altitude can theoretically increase swelling. After 48 hours, flying is fine.
When can I get my lips done again if I want more volume?
Wait a minimum of 2 weeks (ideally 4 weeks) between filler sessions. The tissue needs time to stabilize. Adding more filler too soon risks overcorrection and unevenness.
