Laser Hair Removal Prep — The Complete Pre-Treatment Checklist
What you do before your laser session is just as important as the session itself. Most side effects are caused by poor prep, not poor treatment.
Consult Dr. AnkitaThe Prep Nobody Takes Seriously
You'd be surprised how many patients show up for their laser session having done zero preparation. Unshaved. Recently waxed. Wearing self-tanner. On doxycycline. And then wonder why the results aren't what they expected — or worse, why they got burns.
Preparation isn't optional — it's the foundation of a safe, effective laser session. Here's the complete checklist, in order of importance:
2 Weeks Before: Critical Steps
Stop Sun Exposure
The most important single prep step. Tanned skin has elevated melanin in the epidermis, which competes with hair melanin for laser absorption. Result: the laser targets your skin instead of the hair. Burns, pigmentation, reduced effectiveness — all from sun exposure.
In Lucknow, this is challenging from March to October. The UV index regularly exceeds 8. We advise patients to wear SPF 50, avoid peak sun hours (10am-4pm), and use physical barriers (umbrella, full sleeves) on the treatment area. No sunbathing, no outdoor sports during midday.
Stop Waxing, Threading, and Plucking
These methods remove the hair root. The laser needs the root in place to target it. If you've waxed within the last 2 weeks, the laser literally has nothing to target. Shaving is fine — it cuts hair at the surface without disturbing the root.
Pause Photosensitive Medications
Doxycycline, minocycline, isotretinoin, some herbal supplements — all increase skin sensitivity to light. Inform Dr. Ankita about every medication you're taking. We may need to pause certain medications 1-2 weeks before treatment. Never stop prescription medications without consulting your prescribing doctor.
24-48 Hours Before: Practical Steps
Shave the Treatment Area
Use a clean razor. Shave in the direction of hair growth to minimize irritation. The ideal hair length for laser is just below the skin surface — freshly shaved but not raw. If you shave the morning of your appointment, your skin might be mildly irritated, which makes laser less comfortable. The sweet spot: shave the evening before.
Clean Skin — No Products
No lotions, oils, deodorant, perfume, or makeup on the treatment area. These can interfere with laser transmission or cause chemical reactions. Come with clean, bare skin. Shower before your appointment if possible.
Skip Caffeine (Optional but Helpful)
Caffeine increases pain sensitivity slightly. If you're treating a sensitive area (bikini, upper lip), skipping your morning chai might make the session marginally more comfortable. This isn't mandatory — just a tip that some patients find genuinely helpful.
Day of Treatment
- Wear loose, comfortable clothing — easy access to the treatment area. Loose cotton is ideal.
- Arrive 15 minutes early — for numbing cream application on sensitive areas.
- Bring sunscreen — you'll apply it immediately after the session before leaving the clinic.
- Eat before your appointment — low blood sugar during treatment increases discomfort and risk of lightheadedness. Not kidding. We've had patients skip breakfast and nearly faint during bikini laser.
Common Prep Mistakes
| Mistake | Consequence | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Waxing 1 week before | Session is ineffective — no root to target | Reschedule 2-3 weeks later |
| Sunburn the weekend before | Session must be postponed (risk of burns) | SPF 50, avoid sun 2 weeks pre-treatment |
| Forgetting to mention medications | Increased sensitivity and burn risk | Full medication disclosure at every visit |
| Not shaving before | Surface hair absorbs laser, causing surface burns instead of reaching the follicle | Shave evening before appointment |
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I exercise the day before laser?
Yes — exercising before is fine. Just shower and clean the treatment area afterwards. The restriction is exercising AFTER laser (wait 24-48 hours).
I forgot to shave. Can you do it at the clinic?
Yes, we can shave the area for you. But it's better to do it yourself the evening before — gives your skin time to settle.
Is there anything I should eat or avoid eating?
No specific dietary restrictions. Just don't come hungry. A normal meal before your session is ideal. Staying hydrated helps with overall skin condition and comfort.
