Can I Shave 3 Days Before Laser Hair Removal?
The short answer is no. Shaving 3 days before your laser session leaves too much stubble above the skin, increasing the risk of burns and decreasing the effectiveness of the treatment.
Consult Dr. AnkitaWhy the Timing of Shaving Matters
Laser hair removal works by targeting the pigment (melanin) inside the hair follicle beneath the surface of the skin. The laser energy travels down the hair shaft to destroy the root.
If you shave 3 days prior, you will likely have a few millimeters of stubble. When the laser fires, it will target that visible stubble resting on top of the skin. This wastes precious thermal energy singing the surface hair instead of penetrating down to the root. Consequently, the procedure becomes less effective, smells like burnt hair, and drastically increases the risk of surface skin burns or hyperpigmentation.
The Golden Rule: 24 Hours Before
The ideal time to shave is 12 to 24 hours before your appointment. This timing is critical for two reasons:
- No surface hair: The skin is smooth, allowing all the laser energy to bypass the skin surface and hit the root directly.
- Skin recovery: It gives the microscopic cuts or irritation from shaving 24 hours to heal before being subjected to intense laser heat, making the procedure much more comfortable.
What If I Forget?
If you realize you forgot to shave the day before, it is better to carefully dry-shave (or use a fresh razor with sensitive shaving cream) a few hours before your appointment than to go in with 3 days' worth of stubble. Never wax or pluck between laser sessions, as those methods remove the very root the laser is designed to target.
